It was the year of high budget and epic video game trailers. The most expensive game trailer ever made was released by the Chinese studio NetEase for their game Demon Seals. It cost $2 million dollars to create and has higher quality graphics than many blockbuster movies. But the game itself could easily be called a Diablo clone and there doesn’t seem to be any move by NetEase to bring the game to the western audience.
We also saw beloved Marvel superhero actor Chris Evans star in the trailer for Call of Duty Online, another game that is unlikely to make it to western audiences.
What makes a trailer awesome? Well, having Chris Evans is a good start. But if you can’t afford Chris Evans then story is always a safe way to go. Which is exactly the direction Star Wars The Old Republic took this year in the cinematic trailer for the Knights of the Fallen Empire expansion. If laying the foundations of a story isn’t important then graphics are the next big focus.
